Types of solar systems

Grid-connected, hybrid and off-grid solar

The right solar setup depends on the property, electricity use, budget, grid connection and the level of battery storage or resilience required.

Grid-connected solar

Solar generation is used on site first. Surplus generation may be exported to the grid under the customer’s electricity-retailer and network arrangements, while the property can draw from the grid when solar generation is insufficient.

Hybrid solar and battery

A hybrid system combines solar, battery storage and a grid connection. Surplus generation can charge the battery for later use. Backup during a grid outage is only available when compatible equipment and the required backup configuration are included in the design.

Off-grid solar

An off-grid property relies on its own generation and storage, often with a backup generator or another contingency. Careful load assessment and allowance for poor-weather periods are essential because there is no grid supply to cover a shortfall.

Choosing the right system

We assess energy use, roof or ground-mount options, shading, electrical capacity, network requirements and future plans. The proposal sets out the design assumptions, equipment and expected generation model.
